What is the Spaghetti Bowl Xpress project?


Spaghetti Bowl Xpress (or SBX) is Phase 1 under the Spaghetti Bowl Project umbrella. SBX will address one of the most crash-prone portions of the current spaghetti bowl: the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-580/U.S. 395 ramp and southbound I-580/U.S. 395 from the spaghetti bowl south to Mill St.




What is the difference between Reno Spaghetti Bowl and SBX?


The Reno Spaghetti Bowl project umbrella is the entire project and is anticipated to be built in five phases over 20 years with an estimated cost over $2 billion. Phase 1, the Spaghetti Bowl Xpress (SBX), is a design build project and is anticipated to be substantially completed by the end of 2022.




What are the project limits of SBX?


Spaghetti Bowl Xpress (or SBX) is Phase 1 under the Spaghetti Bowl project umbrella. SBX will address one of the most crash-prone portions of the current spaghetti bowl: the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-580/U.S. 395 ramp and southbound I-580/U.S. 395 from the spaghetti bowl south to Mill St.
Most construction will take place on I-580/U.S. 395 northbound and southbound between Mill St. and the spaghetti bowl, and on I-80 eastbound from Wells Ave. to the spaghetti bowl.




What traffic control can I expect?


Drivers can expect lane closures and traffic shifts on I-580/U.S. 395 northbound and southbound between Mill St. and the spaghetti bowl and intermittent ramp closures. Major traffic control information will be communicated in advance.




What improvements are included In SBX?


  • Add a lane to eastbound exit from I-80 to southbound I-580/U.S. 395.
  • Add lanes and shoulders on southbound I-580 from I-80 to Vassar St.
  • Restripe Wells Ave. to eastbound I-80 on ramp increasing lanes to southbound I-580.
  • Separate ramps for access to and from I-580 at 2nd St./Glendale Ave. and Mill St.
  • Build noise, visual, and neighborhood walls.
  • Repair pavement on northbound I-580.
